The Psychology of a Makeover

For a long time researchers have been looking at the effects of the beauty and fashion industry and the impactthose images have on individuals. Now, in 2017 we also need to consider the effect of social media and how these all interact and impact on self confidence of women in this new world of selfies and Facebook/Instagram profiles. What we are really talking about is Social Comparison Theory and how we can use fashion, beauty and social media to our advantage, go against the trend of negative self images when comparing yourself to others, and actually boost confidence and self-esteem in women.

Why do we believe that a makeover can be a positive experience for you? Here's a quick summary of research!

  • The idea that a striking physical makeover is linked to a psychological one is not new (Crawley, M, 2006). Like so many makeover shows on TV, like 'What Not to Wear' and 'How to Look Good Naked', the physical makeover often marks a point of re-birth or transformation from an old self you didn't love, to the new self you always felt you were or wanted to be (Crawley, M, 2006).
  • Social comparison theory suggests that we're constantly comparing ourselves to others – either seeing ourselves as more fortunate or less fortunate. Because of our constant exposure of fashion images we have internalized that the ideal woman should look like models and celebrities (Zoe Brown, Marika Tiggemann, 2016). Unfortunately, most of us don't have access to the team of people, including make up artists, stylists, hair dressers and photographers that put those images together so the impact has overwhelmingly been a negative one on the mood of the average woman and how she perceives herself (Zoe Brown, Marika Tiggemann, 2016). That's where we come in!
  • In a 2012 study at Northwestern University, researchers found that participants in a study experienced a boost in performance when they wore the clothes that symbolized the person they dreamed of being. This means that by wearing the clothes like those seen in a glamourous fashion shoot, you will then experience the knock-on effect of confidence, power, sex appeal - or whatever the clothes symbolize to you! (Adam, H., Galinsky, A. D, 2012).
  • How you share personal images is totally up to you, but why do we share them on social media for everyone to see? A 2013 study found that we are motivated to use social media for sharing about ourselves to achieve a sense of belonging (Gangadharbatla, 2013). It now makes sense why we only share the best of our photos! We want to belong and be perceived as the ideal woman that we have in our mind, shaped by the images we are exposed to. Our goal is to show not just yourself, but EVERYONE, how beautiful you really are.
Overall, getting a makeover has the potential to be a life changing experience that can boost your self esteem and feeling of belonging.
